How the weekly shop could result in a personal injury claim

You go in for a pint of milk, some salmon steaks, frozen peas and fruit juice and come out with a serious personal injury. If you thought doing the weekly shop was just that hateful task that must be completed to stop your family from keeling over, think again. Supermarkets can be a hazardous experience.

There have been many instances where shoppers have slipped on wet floors and sought compensation for personal injuries. Jars or bottles can fall from shelves and spill out sticky liquids that are not cleared up properly, if at all. Supermarket roofs can leak and leave a small wet patch on the floor which can spread quickly, causing slipping accidents which could lead to back and neck injuries, spinal injuries and fractured or broken bones. It is also possible that toilets and wash basins could overflow leaving a slippery surface in the area surrounding the toilets.

It is the responsibility of the shop owner/manager to clean any mess up immediately to prevent customers form sustaining personal injuries. It is also their responsibility to use hazard signs to make customers aware of any spillages or leaks that are in the process of being cleaned up.

There is a risk of head injuries caused by objects falling from overloaded or carelessly stacked shelves. Heavy, blunt objects such as tins of baked beans could cause a closed head injury and lead to concussion and serious headaches.

The supermarket is also liable for making sure that shelves are stacked safely. It is possible that any personal injuries that customers sustain in supermarkets can be claimed against the supermarket. There have been many successful compensation cases where supermarkets have been found to be negligent.
