Cycling star sustains whiplash injury in road accident

A professional South African cyclist suffered personal injuries including whiplash injury and a lower back injury after being knocked off her bike by a taxi.

The road accident involving cycling champion, Anriette Schoeman, occurred near St Albans, Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape. A minibus taxi drove straight into the back of the cyclist and the driver is being investigated for reckless driving.

As well as a whiplash injury, a lower back injury, and shoulder injuries, she sustained bruising to her legs and is now recovering in hospital.

Set to represent South Africa in several races commencing in Germany, France and Italy in August, and culminating in the World Championships in September, the cyclist will now wait to be declared fit so she can resume training.

Schoeman was relieved that she sustained minor injuries such as whiplash and added that she felt extremely lucky "because it could have been much worse."
