Young drivers have to make car accident claims due to overcrowding

Direct Line car insurance has revealed that many young drivers have to make a car accident claim after they have travelled in a car that was overloaded or were involved in a road traffic accident with a car that had too many occupants.

It appears that many younger motorists are overloading their cars with passengers as too few drivers can afford to pay to run their own car. The result is groups of teenagers catching a lift and endangering themselves and running the risk of causing personal injury to another person.

Research has shown that as many as 20,000 young people in the UK share their cars and around 20 per cent of these often feel pressurised into packing their vehicles with more people than they are allowed.

By law, everybody travelling in a car must wear a seatbelt. The damage that can be done to all occupants of a car when someone is not buckled up can be horrific. New and inexperienced drivers can easily be distracted by having lots of people in their car and accidents can lead to serious personal injuries and those involved having to make a car accident claim.

Motoring groups are calling on young drivers not to take more passengers than their car can safely or legally accommodate and to ensure that everyone wears a seatbelt. The alternative could be a costly car accident claim.
