Teenager dies from head injury after gang fight
A 13-year-old boy has died after receiving serious personal injuries during a gang fight in East London.
The teenager, who has not been named, was discovered with a head injury several hundred yards from West Ham's Upton Park football ground on Wednesday 26th April. He was rushed to hospital and placed in intensive care but died shortly after.
Police have revealed that they believe the boy was involved in a fight between two large gangs and are treating the incident as a murder. Five youngsters have been arrested and officers insist the incident is not football-related.
The youth is originally from Lithuania and now lives with his family in Plaistow. He was thought to be with a group of six to 10 other boys when they started fighting with a larger gang. It is unknown if the boy's head injury was caused by a weapon and police are currently investigating the scene of the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Jason Gwilliam of the Metropolitan Police, told reporters, "Officers are carrying out a forensic examination of the scene and we are working closely with schools in the immediate area to assist with enquiries.
"We would urge anybody who has any information about this incident, or any further information, to contact the incident room."
