Personal injury news

Teachers confine kids to avoid having compensation claims made against them

It seems that teachers are so wary of having personal injury compensation claims made against them that the education of UK children is beginning to suffer.

Dr Barratt from the University of Bath says that as a direct result of some high-profile compensation claims that have come about over the last few years, both teachers and parents are concerned about children attending field trips.

Teachers are so concerned about their legal liability while on field trips that they feel they have little choice but to limit their lessons to the classroom. However, this means that the younger generation is learning little about the world around them.

To overcome this problem, Dr Barratt has designed a new qualification for trainee geography teachers to help them overcome their fears. This has already been a success with some teaching students and involved first aid and help with lesson plans.

The Field Studies council (FSC) is looking to develop this programme further in order to prepare teachers to work outside the classroom with confidence and safety, reducing the chances of personal injury claims being brought against them.
