TV boss kills motorcyclist in road traffic accident

A top Welsh television executive is facing a jail sentence after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Dafydd Evans, an important figure at Llanelli TV production firm Tinoplois was involved in an horrific road traffic accident in October 2004 which left a young motorcyclist dead. He had been drinking at a party before the incident, which occurred after he pulled out into the path of the motorbike.

The motorcyclist, 24-year-old Darren Beynon, died instantly from horrific personal injuries as his Yamaha erupted into a fireball. Evans claimed he became disorientated by the vehicle accident and lay face down in a muddy field for 14 hours, insisting that he could not hear the police helicopters and dog teams sent to look for him.

The next morning 41-year-old Evans handed himself into Carmarthen Police Station where he tested negative for alcohol and blamed the motorcyclist for causing the crash.

He had denied the charge of causing death by dangerous driving but a jury at Swansea Crown Court found him guilty by a 10-2 majority verdict. Judge Eleri Rees adjourned sentencing for three weeks but warned that it is possible he will be sent to prison.

Talking about the road traffic accident, Dafydd Evans had said, "I think the death of any 24-year-old man is a huge tragedy. I wish I could spin the tape back. But his death was no doing of mine."
