Suicide woman survives motorway bridge plunge
A suicidal woman who plunged 40ft from a motorway bridge survived with only head injuries and a broken ankle, police have revealed.
The 25-year-old, who has not been named, threw herself from a bridge above the M60 near Manchester, crashing onto a moving car. Shocked witnesses told how the woman landed head-first on the Rover's bonnet before tumbling into the road, and many have expressed their astonishment that she survived.
A 32-year-old motorist who was on a shopping trip with her young daughter, saw the incident unfold and told reporters, "I just thought that someone had thrown something off the bridge. We were all travelling at about 40mph because it was busy. If we had been travelling at 70mph, I am sure that she would not be here today.
"She landed on the bonnet head-first and bounced onto the road.
"Everybody slammed on the brakes and it all happened very quickly. I got out of the car and held her. She was saying she was hurting and kept trying to get up before paramedics arrived."
Lucky not to cause a potentially deadly road traffic accident, the woman was taken to Fairfield Hospital but, amazingly, her head injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
