Shop assistant that caused neck injury in street stabbing jailed
A disagreement over short change between a shop assistant and a customer in a newsagent's last year ended in the shop assistant stabbing the customer, causing a neck injury.
The High court heard how Rizwan Mohammed knifed James Weatherburn in the street and then tossed the weapon away.
Mohammed claimed that he suffered racial abuse which provoked the stabbing that caused Mr Weatherburn's neck injury.
The extent of Mr Weatherburn's personal injury has left him unable to return to work as a forklift driver.
20-year-old Mohammed pleaded guilty to assault to injury and was sentenced to 28 months in jail.
Judge Lord Kinclaven rejected Mohammed's plea to be spared a jail sentence and has taken the stabbing and Mr Weatherburn's resulting neck injury very seriously.
The judge commented: 'If you use a knife in the manner described in this case you will face a significant custodial sentence.'
