Shell criticised for death of two men in an accident at work

Two men were killed in an accident at work while carrying out an inspection on the Brent Bravo platform in September 2003. This has resulted in oil multinational Shell receiving serious criticism.

An emergency shutdown valve should have cut in but failed, enabling oil and gas to travel into the pipeline and leg where 45-year-old Keith Moncrieff and 22-year-old Sean McCue were working.

An inquiry into the fatal work accident was conducted by Sheriff Colin Harris. This revealed that the fatalities may have been prevented if the temporary repair the men were inspecting had been managed correctly and the risks of working in this leg of the platform had been properly assessed.

The oil giant admitted to the health and safety violations and received a fine of £900,000.

Shell maintain that safety is their first priority and are desperate to make sure that no other accidents at work occur, keeping their workers safe from the risk of personal injury or worse.
