Pensioner dies from brain injury after house
raided by burglars

A cancer sufferer who was confronted in his home by burglars later died from a brain injury brought on by several heart attacks.

Sam Marshall, 66, watched as two masked robbers ransacked his home, making off with what is believed to have been hundreds of pounds.

The ex-miner did not sustain any serious personal injuries in the attack but suffered three heart attacks and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital, where he later died from brain damage.

The pensioner had been suffering from prostate cancer for about two years and was believed to have kept up to £8,000 in his home. His family have appealed to anybody who may know something to come forward to the police.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
