Pensioner considers compensation claim after bus fall

An elderly lady from Scotland is considering making a personal injury compensation claim after she was left battered and bruised from a fall on a bus.

73-year-old Ann Potter was returning home from a night at the bingo on a bus adapted especially for people with mobility problems when the accident happened. As the driver was collecting her wheeled zimmer frame from the back of the bus, she toppled out of the side door, crashing to the ground and severely bruising herself.

Lucky not to suffer serious personal injuries, the Kirkcaldy pensioner told reporters, "The drop to the pavement was much higher than I thought it was and it was definitely higher than the other bus I had been on before.

"The only thing I remember about it was being helped up from the pavement and I managed to make my way to my neighbour's house because I was so shaken.

"She made me a cup of tea and took me to the hospital where I was given a check over. I didn't break any bones, but I am all bruised down one side."

Mrs Potter's family have contacted Fife Council about the incident and are waiting for them to speak to witnesses before they decide what action to take.

Hearing that they could be on the end of a costly compensation claim, a council spokesman said, "The driver went to the rear of the vehicle to collect the customer's walking aid and then went forward to assist the passenger who by this time had decided to get off the minibus herself. In doing so, however, she fell.

"Normally the customer waits for assistance from the driver as she has difficulty walking unaided, but on this occasion, for whatever reason, she decided to get off the minibus of her own accord."
