Man lucky to survive high-speed car accident
A motorist had a miraculous escape following a car accident that saw his vehicle career off the road, smash through trees and end up teetering upside down on a riverbank.
The driver of the Y-reg Mitsubishi, Daniel Spowson, was trapped in the car for nearly an hour before firefighters were able to release him. He was rushed to hospital with a back injury but his condition is not thought to be serious.
The vehicle accident occurred near Barrowford, Lancashire, and it is thought the Mitsubishi was involved in a collision with another vehicle, causing it to leave the carriageway. The other car, an L-reg Toyota, was being driven by a 17-year-old man who had only recently passed his test. A student at a local college, he was initially arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving, but was later released without charge.
Sergeant Gareth Hill, of Lancashire Police, attended the scene of the car accident and told reporters, "From what we have been told so far we believe one of the vehicles was making an overtaking manoeuvre at speed and that has been the cause of the accident.
"The Mitsubishi has gone between the hedgerow and the wall. Miraculously he has missed the bridge, and has overturned.
"He is extremely lucky to be alive."
A full police investigation is now underway to establish the exact cause of the car accident.
