Man arrested after policeman dies in car accident

A man is being held on suspicion of murder after a police officer died in a car accident while driving him to a police station.

PC Joe Carroll and a colleague were escorting a man they had arrested on the morning of April 13th when their patrol car left the A69 in Northumberland and overturned. PC Carroll suffered serious personal injuries in the incident and died before paramedics could reach the scene.

The other officer in the car was treated for minor injuries and the suspect, who was already under arrest for an unrelated matter, was then re-arrested on suspicion of murder. Exact details of the road traffic accident are not clear, but a full investigation is now underway.

Northumbria Chief Constable Mike Craik paid tribute to the deceased policeman, saying, "PC Carroll was greatly loved and respected within the community and lived there for more than 20 years.

"He knew everyone and everyone knew him - he was a real old fashioned copper.

"He was also a warm, genuine man, as motivated and committed to the job he was doing in his community as the day he joined us more than 20 years ago.

"He will be greatly missed by all of us and especially his local community who knew and loved him well - it will be a terrible, terrible shock for his local community and colleagues to bear."

Flowers and tributes have already begun to appear at the site of the tragic car accident.
