Judge orders brain-injured man to be locked up
A man has been locked up after a brain injury turned him into a vicious sexual predator.
25-year-old Anthony Thomas has been ordered to spend an indefinite amount of time in a secure mental hospital after admitting attempting to rape a teenager in a North Wales park. He pleaded guilty to the charge at Mold Crown Court and will only be released when experts agree that he is no longer a danger to the public.
The court heard that Thomas' perversion is the result of a barbaric beating five years ago which left him with a brain injury, and doctors have warned that he is likely to attack other women if he is not treated.
The incident for which he has been locked up occurred on the evening of August 25th 2005 when he pounced on a 16-year-old girl in a Llandudno park. He punched her repeatedly in the face and chest, causing minor personal injuries, before attempting to rape her. She fought back, however, scratching his face and kicking him in the head before managing to escape and running home in tears.
DNA evidence from under the teenager's fingernails was used to track down Thomas, but he claimed he had no recollection of the incident. A combination of alcohol and his mental illness is believed to be responsible for the loss of memory.
Ordering Thomas to be caged, Judge John Rogers QC, said, "I am quite satisfied that you would not have committed this very serious offence but for the fact that you yourself were assaulted and suffered a brain injury.
"I have to do what is best in the public interest - and the best for you."
The young girl who was attacked by Anthony Thomas has revealed that she is now unable to sleep alone and is psychologically damaged by the incident. It is unknown if she is planning to make a compensation claim against her assailant.
