Horrific work accident leads to personal injury compensation claim

A man who was left with serious personal injuries after being buried alive in cement is planning to make a personal injury compensation claim.

Calum Redman suffered a broken leg, dislocated ankle, fractured pelvis and cracked ribs when he attempted to stop metal decking collapsing on a Hertfordshire construction site in November 2004. The 36-year-old spent weeks in hospital after the work accident and is likely to be affected by his injuries for the rest of his life.

The horrific incident occurred during the building of Royston Leisure Centre and has resulted in the building contractors, Pellikaan Construction, being fined £45,000 by the Health and Safety Executive.

It has emerged that Mr Redman was ordered to position a prop underneath metal decking that was being covered with concrete, but the structure collapsed on top of him. He was buried in metalwork and cement and fellow workmen fought against the clock to release him before rushing him to hospital.

An expert said, "It is amazing that Mr Redman survived and it is fortunate that no other employees were injured in the accident."

No date has yet been set for a hearing for Mr Redman's personal injury compensation claim.
