Personal injury news - Halfords pay boy £12,500 following compensation claim

Halfords have awarded a boy £12,500 for a compensation claim made following a serious bicycle accident seven years ago.

Berwyn Pearce, of Pontypridd, had been given an Apollo Guru bike as a Christmas present from his parents and suffered serious personal injuries when the brakes failed to work.

He said, "The bike was a present from my mum and dad. It came in a box and my dad put it together but before the crash we took it down to Halfords to get it serviced."

Berwyn, aged 11 at the time, crashed into a tree and was thrown 12ft down the road, rupturing his spleen and breaking two ribs.

"I'd taken it out three times before the brakes failed. The steering went as well and that's when I hit the tree."

Berwyn sustained serious personal injuries in the bicycle accident and doctors at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital had to remove his spleen.

Without a spleen, Berwyn, now aged 18, will have to take penicillin every day for the rest of his life to protect his body from any possible infections.

Halfords paid £12,500 following his compensation claim but have refused to accept liability.
