Epileptic receives personal injury compensation payout
A teenage epilepsy sufferer who was left with severe learning difficulties after doctors failed to treat him properly immediately after his birth has been awarded almost £7 million personal injury compensation.
Christian Raphael, now 19, suffered an epileptic fit following his birth at Newmarket Hospital, and health chiefs admitted that failings were made in diagnosing and treating the youngster's condition when he was born with low blood sugar levels.
The personal injury compensation package was agreed between legal teams on the day before a planned 10-day medical malpractice trial was due to take place at London's High Court. In addition, a spokesman for the Strategic Health Authority issued a full apology to Christian and his family and said, "The respective legal representatives have worked together to agree an appropriate level of compensation and, although such a payment can never fully compensate in such circumstances, hope it will at last provide Christian with a level of support and security for the future.
"The SHA wish Christian and his family all the best for the future."
Christian's mother, Vicki, told reporters that the personal injury compensation would help pay for a more suitable home and finance his future care needs. She also praised those who have supported him during his lifetime, saying, "We would just like to thank all of Christian's amazing care team for their unstinting support throughout the years."
