Elderly lady dies after supermarket accident
The family of an elderly lady may be in a position to make a compensation
claim after she died following a tragic supermarket accident.
86-year-old Vera Longfield suffered a broken hip when she was crushed by a stock cage at a Tesco store in Lancashire, and
died in hospital from complications two days later.
Details of the incident remain sketchy, but it is believed that Mrs Longfield was doing her shopping when a stock cage she
was standing next to was hit by a trolley, colliding with her and knocking her to the floor, causing painful personal injuries.
Staff at the supermarket have spoken of their sadness at the elderly Clitheroe resident’s death and a Tesco spokesman
said, “We were extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Mrs Longfield. She was a regular and well-known
customer and extremely well-liked by our staff.
Talking of the tragic incident, the spokesman explained, “The consequences of the incident were tragic. Although the
circumstances were so unusual, we are of course reviewing exactly what happened.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family.”
Mrs Longfield’s family have not discussed whether they are planning to make a compensation claim, but the elderly lady’s death comes at a time when an increasing amount of people are
becoming injured whilst shopping.
Recent incidents include customers slipping on vomit that has been left in aisles, products falling off shelves and causing
injuries, and displays collapsing on top of unsuspecting shoppers.
