Accident victim makes compensation claim
for fertility treatment
A man left paralysed after a road traffic accident is making a compensation claim so he and his wife can attempt to complete the family they have always wanted.
Mark Easdon was left permanently wheelchair-bound when his motorcycle was hit by a lorry in July 2003. The collision left him with a severe back injury and he has since been unable to use his arms and legs and requires nursing and care around the clock.
Part of the compensation claim is in order to pay for fertility treatment, which the couple hope will allow Selena Easdon to have another two children. Her first, a girl, was born shortly after the road traffic accident.
Mr Easdon is attempting to make his compensation claim for £8 million against A. Clarke & Co, the employers of the lorry driver. As well as providing fertility treatment, if the claim is successful, the money will also be used to ensure the financial security of the family.
Mr Easdon’s personal injury solicitors released a statement saying, “He and his wife were expecting their first child at the time of the accident. They had planned to have three children. They still wish to do so.
“To have any effective chance of increasing their family, he and his wife will require treatment from a centre… which specialises in fertility treatment for those with spinal cord injury.”
After hearing a preliminary hearing for the trial, Lord Kingarth ruled that the case was too complicated for a jury to understand and so should be decided by a judge.
