Car accident compensation claims in the UK

If you have been involved in a car accident that was caused thanks to someone else's negligent actions, you may have suffered an injury.  If that's the case, you are entitled to make a personal injury claim.  We can help you if you've suffered a whiplash injury, cuts and bruises or a more serious injury such as a head injury, spinal cord injury or brain injury in a car accident that was not your fault.

What can I claim compensation for?
If you’ve been injured in a car accident which happened as the result of someone else's neglectful behaviour, as well as being compensated for your pain and suffering, you are entitled to claim for any expenses that were incurred as a result of the accident. These costs include the following:

As far as possible, you should keep any receipts for all out of pocket expenses arising from the accident as they will be needed should you decide to make a claim.

How long do car accident compensation claims take?
Realistically, it is very difficult to be able to give a clear answer to this question, despite it being one of the most common questions asked by clients.  This is because no two accidents are alike, and therefore no two sets of injuries and the circumsances experienced by those who've suffered them, are alike.  In a personal injury claim, the idea is that the compensation the injured person receives, puts them back in the position they were in, had it not been for the accident. Whilst this means dealing with financial outlay as a result of the accident, it also means understanding how an injury has impacted someone and making sure their compensation is an appropriate amount to compesate.

All of this can take time, and we are often in the position of waiting until an injury has healed, or has resolved to a level that's as good as it's going to get, until we are able to settle a claim on someone's behalf.

All that said, we also need to reach an agreement with the other party's representatives as to the settlement of your claim, and again, this is not something that it is easy to put a timeframe on.

Of course, a claim with more straightforward injuries, where representatives of both parties can easily reach an agreement on the amount of compensation to be awarded, will settle more quickly than when there are issues in dispute.

Your lawyer will always keep you informed as to where the case is, and you can ask them for their thoughts on a timeframe at any time, but be advised that these timeframes can change, depending on whether or not the circumstances in your case change.
