Step one - What to do following a car accident
- Stop the car and assess the situation. It is illegal to just drive off. This is called a hit and run.
- Call an ambulance or seek medical assistance if anyone has suffered a personal injury
- Swap contact details, car registrations and car insurance details with the other party
- Call the police or report the accident to the police within 24 hours. If the other party says they will do this make sure that they do
- Write down your version of what happened soon after the car accident so that you can refer back to it later
- Try to draw a sketch of the accident scene or if you have a mobile phone with a camera take a picture of the scene, this may be used as evidence
Step two - Making a car accident claim
